The GOP voted 23 to 17 down party lines to promote a contempt resolution to the full house against Attorney General Eric Holder accusing him of withholding documents on the gun trafficking operation in Mexico called Fast & Furious.

However the Obama administration invoked executive privilege and is backing Holder, stating the documents should not have been released because they involved confidential internal deliberations that are traditionally not subject to congressional subpoena.

Representative Elijah Cummings (MD) a high ranking Democrat who sits on the Oversight committee released a statement saying , “What we just witnessed was an extreme, virtually unprecedented action based on election year politics rather than fact… Even in the face of an assertion of executive privilege, the Republicans didn’t even pause to consider the law and instead decided to take this extreme step.”
